IPU Secretary-General: Religious Leaders Play a Vital Role in Promoting Global Cooperation
Martin Chungong, Secretary-General of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), delivered a video address during the opening session of the Second International Symposium of the General Secretariat for Fatwa Authorities Worldwide, held under the auspices of Egypt’s Dar al-Ifta titled “Fatwa and Contemporary Human Issues: Toward Sound Ijtihād that Responds to Modern Challenges.” He underscored the crucial role of religious leaders in fostering global collaboration and advancing shared knowledge.
He highlighted that these leaders carry the trust and moral responsibility of their communities, guiding them with wisdom and integrity. Supporting and training them is essential to prevent the spread of hatred and violence, ensuring their influence promotes unity, harmony, and constructive engagement rather than division.
Chungong further emphasized that, as global institutional authorities, religious bodies have a unique responsibility to advance peace, reconciliation, and understanding. Through cooperation, they work toward the shared goal of promoting community well-being, addressing societal challenges, and nurturing values that strengthen humanity as a whole.
