In his keynote speech delivered at the inauguration session of Mecca’s International Conference on Islamic Unity currently held under the auspices of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah bin Abdul-Aziz, Egypt’s Grand Mufti, Dr. Shawki Allam, stated that the phenomenon of excluding and discriminating against the other is a lethal threat to the unity and stability of the Muslim Ummah.
Dr. Allam made it clear in his speech that the existence of diversity and differences are inevitable due to the indispensability of the confluence of specialists in different fields under the umbrella of contemporary sound ijtihad. “The Prophet (peace be upon him) taught his Companions the fiqh of accepting the other and handling differences provided they do not contradict the fundamentals of the religion,” Dr. Allam stated.
Dr. Allam concluded his speech by calling on specialized renowned Islamic Scholars to promote the culture of diversity, coexistence and accepting the other in light of Shari’ah guidelines.
