The Grand Mufti writes an article about the sanctity of life in Islam in the Kenyan newspaper “The Star”
The Grand Mufti of Egypt, Dr. Shawki Allam, wrote in an article published in the Kenyan newspaper The Star and titled “Taking up the challenge to combat violent extremism” that it is time to take the responsibility of countering terrorism collectively and seriously to save the world from both extremism and bloodshed. He said that the crimes committed by terrorists and extremists against humanity are not only an obstacle to international peace and security but distort the image of Islam and sever religious and cultural relations between different nations. Dr. Allam added that all religions sanctify human life and that the Quran unequivocally states that the one who takes even one life is as if "he has killed all mankind”.
Dr. Allam stressed that radical ideologies must be challenged and rooted out at both the physical and intellectual levels through a proper presentation of the true teachings of Islam. He also said that Egypt needs global support in its fight against the cancer of terrorism. By fighting this battle, Egypt is not just defending itself but is also defending humanity against the encroaching danger of terrorism and extremism. Measures such as blocking the financial resources of terrorist groups, denying them safe haven and preventing them from growth and expansion have been taken.
