Borrowing money to perform hajj and visit Medina
Question
What is the ruling on borrowing money to perform hajj and visit Medina? I have already performed hajj once before and borrowed 500 SAR from my brother for that purpose. I have neither repaid it to this day nor made the visit to Medina. My brother has since passed away. Is my hajj valid and how can I repay my debt to my brother?
Answer
The inquirer’s hajj is valid provided it fulfilled all the conditions and pillars of hajj. Visiting Medina is neither a condition nor one of the rituals of hajj; it is merely recommended.
The inquirer’s hajj remains valid despite borrowing a portion of the expenses and not having repaid the loan until now. The inquirer must discharge the debt to his brother’s heirs—his wife, children, and others as the case may be. Each heir is to take from this debt an amount proportional to their legal share of the inheritance.
