Giving a newborn the name “NurAllah”
Question
The inquirer says that Allah has blessed him with a baby girl whom he has named “NurAllah” (light of Allah). He would like to know whether the name he chose for his daughter is permissible in Islamic law.
Answer
In Islamic law, a father holds certain rights over his child, and likewise, the child is entitled to certain rights over the father. Among the child’s rights is the entitlement to a righteous mother and the choice of a good name. Islamic law does not prohibit names such as the one mentioned in the question, provided the intention behind choosing such a name is not to mock or demean the attributes of Allah Almighty. However, if the name is chosen with the intention of seeking blessings, then it is permissible. NurAllah is among the things by which the servants of Allah seek blessings. Allah Almighty describes His light in the verse, “Allah is the Light of the heavens and the earth” (Quran, 24:35).
And Allah Almighty knows best.
