Taking a copy of the Quran that was made an endowment from the mosque

Question

What is the position of a person who takes a copy of the Quran that was made an endowment from the mosque? Is this permissible?

Answer

Whoever takes a copy of the Quran that has been endowed (waqf) for the mosque, and goes out with it has committed a sin. This is because, once a copy of the Quran is made an endowment for the mosque in the cause of Allah Almighty, it becomes the property of the mosque; its ownership is relinquished immediately upon declaring, “I make this an endowment for this mosque.”

Accordingly, it is not permissible for anyone to take a copy of the Quran from a mosque and go outside with it. However, there is no sin if one takes a copy of the Quran and read from it inside the mosque, provided it is returned to its proper place afterward. In such a case, one is rewarded for reading the Quran.

And Allah Almighty knows best.
