Gold wedding bands for men

Question

What is the Islamic ruling regarding a man wearing a gold wedding band? It is not meant for showing off or adornment; rather, it symbolizes a man’s bond with his wife. It should be noted that the band is light in weight.

Answer

Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) prohibited men from wearing gold rings. ʿAbdullah Ibn ʿUmar (may Allah be pleased with them both) also narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to wear a gold ring but he discarded it, saying, “I will never wear it again.”  Consequently, the people also discarded their rings (recorded by al-Bukhari in the chapter on clothing).

Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said,
“Gold and silk have been made permissible for the females of my Ummah, but forbidden for its males”
(recorded by Ahmad, al-Nasa`i, and at-Tirmidhi who graded it authentic).

ʿAli Ibn Abu Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) also narrated that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took a piece of silk in his right hand and a piece of gold in his left hand, and said, ‘These two are forbidden for the males of my Ummah’” (recorded by Ahmad, Abu Dawud, al-Nasa`i, Ibn Majah, and Ibn Hibban; Ibn Majah added, “ … and lawful for their females”).

These and other authentic hadiths provide definitive evidence that silk and gold are forbidden for men while permissible for women. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) is a noble example for us and for all Muslims. Allah Almighty says, “Whatever the Messenger gives you, take it; and whatever he forbids you from, refrain from it”
(Quran, 59:7) and “Whoever obeys Allah and His Messenger has indeed achieved a great success” (Quran, 33:71). May Allah grant us all success and guide us to that which pleases Him.

And Allah the Almighty knows best.
