Allocating time exclusively at night to read the Quran
Question
What is the ruling on reading the noble Quran only at night during the month of Ramadan to complete one’s daily portion, known as wird? Does this count as abandoning the Quran during daytime?
Answer
Reading the Quran at night is among the commendable and praiseworthy acts. Doing so exclusively at night does not count as abandoning it during the day.
It is recommended (mustahabb) to complete the entire Quran, especially in Ramadan. Ibn ʿAbbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrated, “The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was the most generous of people. His generosity would peak in Ramadan when Jibril (peace be upon him) would meet him every night to teach him the Quran, making him more generous than the rain-bearing wind” (Bukhari and Muslim).
It is recommended to read the Quran at night, as indicated by textual evidences, such as:
- “Indeed, the righteous will be among gardens and springs, receiving what their Lord has given them. Indeed, they were, before that, doers of good. They used to sleep but little of the night, and in the hours before dawn they would ask forgiveness” (Quran, 51:15–18).
- “And the servants of the Most Merciful are those who walk upon the earth humbly, and when the ignorant address them, they say words of peace. And those who spend [part of] the night to their Lord prostrating and standing [in prayer]” (Quran, 25:63–64).
- Salim narrated from Ibn ʿUmar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “What an excellent man ʿAbdullah is! If only he would pray during the night.”
Salim added, “From then on, ʿAbdullah would sleep very little at night”
(Bukhari and Muslim).
- ʿAbdullah Ibn ʿAmr Ibn al-ʿAṣ (may Allah be pleased with them both) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him, “O ʿAbdullah, do not be like so-and-so who used to stand in prayer at night, but then abandoned it”
(Bukhari and Muslim).
The ruling
Reading the Quran at night is a recommended act. Restricting the practice to nighttime does not amount to neglecting or abandoning it during the day.
And Allah Almighty knows best.
