The exclusivity of the designation ‘Al-Masjid al-Aqsa’
Question
Some people built a mosque in a village in a non-Arab country and named it ‘Al-Masjid al-Aqsa,’ which led to a disagreement over the designation.
Answer
Al-Masjid al-Aqsa is among the mosques that are endowed with distinguished status and sanctity by Allah and in Islamic law. Allah Almighty says, “Glory be to Him Who took His servant by night from Al-Masjid Al-Haram to Al-Masjid Al-Aqsa, whose surroundings We have blessed, to show him some of Our signs. Indeed, He is the Hearing, the Seeing” (Quran, 17:1). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) also said, “Do not undertake a journey to any mosque except three; this mosque of mine, Al-Masjid al-Haram, and Al-Masjid al-Aqsa” (Musnad Ahmad).
Based on the above, it is impermissible in Islamic law to name any other mosque on Earth ‘Al-Masjid al-Aqsa.’
And Allah Almighty knows best.
