What is the ruling for using nose drops and ear drops when fasting?

Question

What is the ruling for using nose drops and ear drops when fasting?

Answer

According to scholars, the body cavity comprises the stomach, intestines and bladder xxx, the lower part of the head. Anything that breaks the fast enters any of the above through a manifest body orifice vitiates the fast.
For this reasons, scholars have maintained that nose drops vitiates fasting if the droplets reach the head. But if they do not transgress the nasopharynx, then one is not required to make up the fast.
Similarly, the opinion of the majority of scholars and the dominant opinion of the Shafi'I school, is that ear drops vitiate fasting if the droplets reach the head. Conversely, some Shafi'I scholars have maintained that ear drops do not vitiate fasting, basing their argument on that there is no aperture leading from the ear to the head. They argued that the droplets reach the head through pores in the same manner as kohl applied to the eyes. There is no objection to following this opinion to ward off harm, though the former opinion is more religiously precautious.
