What is the ruling on praying in the mosque while wearing sandals or shoes?

There is nothing to prevent a Muslim from praying in footwear in an empty space or in one that is guaranteed not to get dirty. However, if the mosque is carpeted, we should protect it from soiling, even from a substance that is ritually pure [such as mud].
