Egypt’s Mufti Receives Canadian Delegation to Explore Cooperation in Countering Extremist Ideologies
The Grand Mufti of Egypt and President of the General Secretariat for Fatwa Authorities Worldwide, H.E Dr. Nazir Mohammed Ayyad, met with a Canadian delegation headed by the Director of Counter-Terrorism Capacity-Building Programs at Global Affairs Canada, to explore opportunities for cooperation and the exchange of expertise in countering extremism and terrorism. During the meeting, the Grand Mufti outlined the role of Egypt’s Dar al-Ifta and Salam Center for Extremism Studies and Islamophobia in monitoring, analyzing, and addressing extremist phenomena through a rigorous scholarly and institutional framework, emphasizing that effective counter-extremism efforts must go beyond security approaches to focus on awareness-building, correcting misconceptions, and advancing a balanced religious discourse.
He further highlighted the role of the General Secretariat for Fatwa Authorities Worldwide in coordinating fatwa institutions globally, as well as Dar al-Ifta’s research, training, and educational initiatives and its engagement with contemporary challenges. The Canadian delegation expressed its appreciation for Egypt’s efforts in combating extremism and its interest in drawing on Dar al-Ifta’s expertise, commending its institutional professionalism and its contribution to promoting a moderate and contemporary religious discourse.
