Supplicating to Allah through His Beautiful Names after reciting the complete Quran

Question

What is the ruling on supplicating to Allah through His Beautiful Names of Allah after completing the recitation of the entire Noble Quran in congregation?

Answer

Supplicating to Allah through His Beautiful Names falls under the permissibility of making supplications after completing the recitation of the entire Quran. This practice is part of the Sunnah of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and was upheld by the Companions and their successors. Islamic jurists explicitly affirmed its legitimacy based on the Almighty’s words, “And to Allah belong the most beautiful names, so invoke Him by them” (Quran, 7:180) and “Say, ‘Call upon Allah or call upon the Most Merciful. Whichever [name] you call – to Him belong the best names’” (Quran, 17:110).

The unrestricted command to supplicate to Allah implies that this form of worship encompasses all times, places, people, and circumstances. Accordingly, it is impermissible to restrict or limit it without proof, as doing so would constitute unwarranted innovation by restricting what the Exalted has made unrestricted.

Based on this, supplicating to Allah with His Beautiful Names after completing the recitation of the entire Quran is among the recommended and permissible acts that Muslims have consistently practiced. To label this as an innovation is, in fact, to level the accusation of ignorance and misguidance against the scholars of the Ummah. Muslims must therefore be conscious of Allah in their speech, avoid speaking about Allah without knowledge, be knowledgeable of Allah’s commands and prohibitions, and understand the consequences of rulings before issuing them.

And Allah the Almighty knows best.
