Bleeding during Ihram

Question

How does one enter the state of ihram and make 'Umra with a bleeding wound on the bottom of his feet that will not heal due to diabetes and hemophilia?

Answer

According to the opinion of Imam Malik, Shafi'i, the seven scholars of Medina and others, bleeding from either the private parts or the anus does not nullify ablution. They base their opinion on a report of Jabir ibn 'Abdullah, may Allah be pleased with them both, who said, "Two of the Companions of the Prophet [pbuh] were guarding the Muslims during the battle of Dhat al-Rika'. One of them got up to pray and was struck by a hostile arrow. He pulled it out and continued praying while still bleeding." The prophet [pbuh] learnt of this and did not object to it" [The hadith was reported by Ahmed and abu Dawud and declared authentic by ibn Khozeimah, ibn Habban and al-Hakim. It was mentioned by Bukhari as a suspended report].

Al-Hasan al-Basry said, "Muslims continue to pray while bleeding from their wounds [Reported by ibn Abu Shaybah with a good ascription. Bukhari mentioned it as a suspended report].

The Ruling

A wounded person is to make ablution and then dress his wound. There is no harm in entering the state of ihram or in making tawaf. He is not to repeat the ablution except if it is nullified.

Allah Almighty knows best.
