My father suffers from narcissistic personality disorder. I can’t take his aggressive behavior anymore. What should I do?

Question

I am in desperate need of help please, my father has narcissistic personality disorder and is verbally aggressive, this has caused me a lot of mental difficulties in my life, I am 18 years old. I now suffer from depression for the second time and binge eating disorder, I see a psychiatrist. My parents are divorced and I live with my mom, but he still verbally abuses me a lot when we meet or on the phone or through emails, I have tried so much to be good to him for the sake of God, but it has been very humiliating for me lately to put up with his accusations. I just want to know please, the opinion of Islam in this issue, If I am not willing to sacrifice my mental health anymore, what should i do with him? I cannot spend the rest of my life going in and out of depression. Thank you so much for reading my question, god bless you.

Answer

Honorable sister,

Never give heed to your father's conduct toward you so long as to treat him kindly even by praying for him and you do not abuse him verbally or by action. Therefore, you should be content because Allah the Almighty knows everything and never support an oppressor. The utmost thing we seek is to please Allah and not merely the parents.
