Question
I am a bit confused. I don't pray yet I believe in God. Am I an unbeliever?
Answer
Based on the noble Quran and Sunnah, it has been determined that:
- Leaving or neglecting prayers is not an act of disbelief or polytheism. Rather, it is a sin from which a Muslim must repent and begin to perform prayers.
- Whoever passes away while being a true Muslim, believing in God and His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), will be admitted into paradise.
- Whoever passes away after repenting from a certain sin, God will forgive him.
- Whoever passes away while persisting in a sin, such as neglecting prayers, his matter lies in the hands of God the Almighty. He will be punished and then admitted into paradise as long as he is a Muslim, or will be forgiven by God’s grace and mercy.
- The opinion maintaining that such a person is a disbeliever is weak and unauthentic.
And God the Almighty knows best.
