Issuing fatwas on divorce needs special care to preserve families

The fatwas issued by unqualified individuals create disorder and disunity in the society even among the members of the same family. The only way to issue and document religious verdicts is through specialized official authorities which are the Council of Senior Scholars and Dar al-Ifta al-Misriyyah whose main task is to issue fatwas after carefully studying all their details.

When it comes to fatwas on divorce Dr. Magdy Ashour, the Academic Advisor to the Grand Mufti of Egypt and Fatwa Trustee at Dar al-Ifta al-Misriyyah asserted that this type of fatwas are given special attention due to the sacred marital bond between spouses and because they affect the most important component of the society, the family, which Islam seeks to preserve.

Dr. Ashour stated that the opinion allowing a man to divorce his wife due to her political affiliation is personal and not a legal verdict. This is because the divorce in such a case is not prompted by any of the reasons discussed in books of jurisprudence.

Dr. Ashour warned against such fatwas that cause discord and disunity. He added that fatwas on matters that require scrutiny are only to be sought from experts who practice fatwa issuance and its particulars.
