The announcement of a caliphate by the Da'esh extremist group is a delusion that will soon be shattered

Dr. Ibrahim Negm, Advisor to the Grand Mufti of Egypt, stated that the declaration of an Islamic caliphate by ISIS is merely a response to the chaos in Iraq and a direct result of the inflammation of sectarian conflict in the whole region.

In a statement to Reuters, Dr. Negm underestimated the proclamation of a caliphate by a group that deems it permissible to kill both Muslims and non-Muslims and broadcasts their massacre on social media. He called their actions “irrational and illegal coming from impeders of civilization” and described their announcement of a caliphate as “a delusion that will soon be shattered.”

“We must call things with their proper names,” he said, adding that internal fighting in one country cannot be called jihad because jihad is the responsibility of the state and not of individuals.

Dr. Negm said, “We are today engaged in an open combat against vicious behavior which does not conform to Islamic and legal standards.” He emphasized that scholars must warn against such deeds, which he described as unjustified and rejected by Muslim scholars, and which distort the image of Islam and Muslims. Continuing, he said that because Western media muted the voices of moderate scholars, people are influenced by the loud voices which provoke emotions and feelings with reverberating slogans that are nothing but “a word of truth intending wrong implications.”
