My husband wants to control the way I dress. Should I obey him?

Question

Assalam Alikoum,

Alhamdulelah, I try my best to dress in the most modest attire possible. I wear the hijab, I do not wear skinny jeans or leggings, etc. My husband is trying to control everything in my life to the maximum, even my clothes. He refuses that I wear "Carinas" which I agreed to, thinking it would be better to my modesty. However, now, almost everything I wear he objects to and wants me to change and I refuse to.

I fee like I will be asked about what I will wear and since I am not wearing anything tight or bad Islamically, I shouldn't obey his orders. He is literally suffocating me in the sense that I feel like I have no freedom as a woman at all.

Answer

such kind of dispute should be resolved through love and mutual understanding between spouses. In this case a wife must be given precedence to choose the type of garments that suit her, while giving her husband the right to have her in decent attire without posing any difficulty or compulsion upon her. This must be done within the limits prescribed by shari'ah (Islamic law) concerning hijab.

The obligatory hijab for adult Muslim women is that attire which covers the entire body except for the face and hands. Hanafi scholars permitted women to uncover their feet. Based on this, it is permissible for a Muslim woman to wear any attire she wishes so long as she abides by the prescribed conditions for hijab and also if her garment does not lead to tempting men or arousing their sexual desire which is prohibited.
