Is it permissible to chat on the internet with the opposite sex?

Normally, it is permissible to talk with members of the opposite sex. However, the conversation may steer toward what is reprehensible or forbidden. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and his Companions talked to non-mahram (person to whom marriage is permissible) women and Muslim men used to go to the Prophet’s wives and ask them about matters related to the Prophet’s life or aspects of religion.

Talking with other people without seeing them, as is the case with online chatting, is also permissible. However, such communication often leads to a degree of familiarity which could progress to intimacy. When this happens, the nature of the conversations change and develop into what may be considered forbidden. It is important to be vigilant of what you say and always observe the Islamic standards of propriety.
