Among the activities of our association are the following:
1. The Friends of Patients Project in which money is spent on poor patients.
2. The Orphans Welfare Program which provides financial and material assistance to orphans.
3. The Social Assistance Project which provides financial and material assistance to the impoverished.
Is it permissible to spend on these projects from zakat ul-fitr throughout the year or is it obligatory to distribute the sum of zakat-ul-fitr received by the association during the month of Ramadan?
Many babies are born with hearing impairments and need to undergo cochlear implant surgery within the first few months of their life or completely lose their hearing and language skills.

For this reason, the Relief Committee at the Egyptian Medical Syndicate in cooperation with the General Authority for Health Insurance at Alexandria intends to implement the Project for Cochlear Implants. Assalamu Alaikum,
We distribute Zakat centrally through an organization in India. Some people are of the opinion that Zakat cannot be given to a person who is not a true practicing Muslim. In my place it is very difficult to differentiate people, whether they are true practicing Muslims or not. Most poor people here are just Muslims by name. What should we do?
Allah Hafiz.
Asalamu alaikom,
The question is, do I pay zakat on the full amount or total amount in the bank minus the debts owed? I bought an apartment for my son but only paid 50%. The other 50% is in monthly installments. My son does not live in this apartment. If I have the money to pay the remaining balance but choose not to because I need the money to live on for my daily expenses (my husband is dead), do I pay on the amount in the bank or amount in the bank minus the amount I still owe for the apartment? For example, the apartment cost 100,000. I paid 50,000 (3 years ago) and pay 1,000 monthly. I have 70,000 in the bank. Do I pay zakat on 70,000 OR 20,000 (70,000 minus 50,000)? Please provide the answer according to all mathahebs (Hanafi, Malaki, Shaf'i, Hanbali) Thank you.
ASA,
Please advise me regarding one of our family member's suggestions about collecting money (as a part of Zakat on money). This would be deposited in a bank account and its revenue used as financial support for our less fortunate relatives, instead of collecting money only at times of need.
Can this count towards the obligatory zakat on money?

Is zakah payable on gold and silver jewelry that a woman has? Is zakah payable on dowry, whether given in gold or cash? With regard to investments, a large sum of money is invested in a company. A monthly dividend is received and used for expenses. The money invested can be withdrawn at any time. On what is zakah paid in such an instance? With regard to another investment, a monthly dividend is received. However, the money invested with the company cannot be withdrawn for five years. How is zakah calculated in this case? Allah Almighty has enabled us to establish a charity. The main activity of this charity is to prepare those who have memorized the Qur’an to act as role models of good morals and character. We are preparing practical specialized programs which aim to develop their [ability] to memorize the Qur’an, acquire good manners, and emulate the Prophet as a role mode; and in affiliation with human development centers, we are working towards developing their intellectual and behavioral skills to build multi-talented personalities, discover their talents, and develop and firmly establish their affiliation to their Muslim ancestors. The question is:
• Is it permissible to spend zakat money on such programs since they require huge amounts of financial support reaching 1,500 EGP per month for each child and which it has been possible to reduce to 380 EGP by relying on volunteers?
• Is it permissible to use some of these funds on teaching them handicrafts, which develop the right lobe of the brain and teach them the importance of self-reliance, earning from their own labor, and focusing their energies?

Over two years ago, my brother entrusted me with a sum of money to which he added another sum almost two months before he passed away. He asked me to pay zakat on the first sum when the first [lunar] year had passed. However, due to his illness and our preoccupation with him for more than five months prior to his death, he did not ask me to pay its zakat at the end of the second year.
